Fostering a Love for Literature: Dāna Education Laos Reflects on the Success of Its Reading Club Workshop

From January 18 to March 22, 2025, Dāna Education Laos ran a five-week Reading Club workshop series that brought together a growing number of participants eager to engage with literature and each other. Held on January 18, 25, February 8, March 1, and March 22, the workshop was designed with a simple yet powerful goal: to create a space where young people could read, reflect, and come together to share their thoughts in a supportive, thoughtful environment.

What started with modest attendance quickly gained momentum, as word spread and more participants joined the sessions. The steady increase in engagement was a clear sign that there is a real and growing interest in meaningful community-led spaces where young people can build skills, form connections, and grow together.

The Workshop Format: Building Skills Through Literature

Each session followed a clear and effective format: participants read a selected book at home, came prepared to join small group discussions, and then shared their insights through public speaking segments. This structure not only encouraged deeper engagement with the reading material but also helped participants develop critical thinking and communication skills—core to the Dāna Education Laos mission.

The group discussions allowed participants to express diverse perspectives in an inclusive space, while the public speaking segments helped them build confidence and articulate their ideas clearly. As the sessions progressed, it became evident how impactful this format was—not just in enhancing intellectual skills, but also in building community.

New Faces, New Energy: The Rol

e of Volunteers

One of the most rewarding outcomes of the workshop series was the addition of new volunteers who joined the Dāna Education Laos team during the course of the program. Some of these new team members brought valuable skills in photography and graphic design, elevating the quality and presentation of our events. Their contributions were crucial, not just during the sessions, but also in documenting and promoting our activities in more creative and engaging ways.

These volunteers have since become an integral part of our growing community, and we’re incredibly grateful for the energy, dedication, and creativity they’ve brought to the team.

Learning from Experience: Challenges and Improvements

While the workshop series was a success overall, it was not without its challenges. One of the recurring issues was scheduling. On several occasions, the availability of team members created difficulties in event management and coordination. We’ve taken this feedback seriously and are now working to establish a clearer, more detailed scheduling system to ensure smoother operations in the future.

Additionally, we recognized the need for more flexibility in how participants can engage. Moving forward, we plan to allow walk-in participation to ensure no one feels excluded due to scheduling constraints. This added flexibility is in line with our core values of inclusivity and accessibility.

Recognizing Participation and Encouraging Growth

To show appreciation for the commitment and enthusiasm of our participants, Dāna Education Laos plans to issue certificates at the end of each workshop series. These certificates will serve not only as a token of recognition but also as a source of motivation for continued engagement. We believe that acknowledging effort is an important step in encouraging lifelong learning and community involvement.

Continuous Growth Through Reflection

One of the strengths of the Dāna Education Laos team is our commitment to ongoing growth and improvement. After each workshop, we hold internal feedback sessions to reflect on what worked well and what could be improved. This open dialogue helps us stay adaptive and responsive to both team and participant needs.

These feedback sessions have proven invaluable in helping us evolve. They allow us to fine-tune our approach, celebrate small wins, and address any shortcomings as a team. It’s this willingness to learn and grow together that keeps our mission strong and our impact deep.

A Path Forward

The Reading Club workshop series was more than just a set of meetings—it was a journey of community, curiosity, and collaboration. As we look ahead, we’re excited to build on the momentum generated by these sessions. The growing attendance and strong positive feedback show that there is a real appetite for spaces where young people can explore literature, engage in thoughtful conversation, and build lasting connections.

We know that improvements are still needed, especially in scheduling and coordination. But we’re not deterred. With the addition of new volunteers, refined planning strategies, and a deeper understanding of what our community needs, we are confident that future workshops will be even more impactful.

At Dāna Education Laos, we believe in the power of reading—not only to inform and inspire but to bring people together. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved over these five weeks and excited for what lies ahead. Thank you to everyone who joined us, supported us, and grew with us. Together, we’re building a stronger, more engaged, and more empowered community—one page at a time.

With gratitude and hope,

The Dāna Education Laos Team
