A Journey of Growth and Discovery: My 8-Day Cultural Exchange in Japan

Day 1: Arrival in Japan – September 30, 2025

The excitement in the air was palpable as I landed at Narita Airport in Tokyo. After a long flight, I could already feel the energy of Japan enveloping me. The first day was all about getting settled, and the orientation session was a great introduction to the program. We were given an overview of what to expect, and it quickly became clear that Japan was going to offer me much more than I anticipated.

I was also introduced to my fellow exchange participants and a little about their own backgrounds. There was an immediate sense of camaraderie, and I looked forward to learning from others during this trip. Later in the afternoon, I attended an interesting lecture about “PLATEAU”—a 3D city modeling project, which gave me a glimpse into how Japan is blending technology and urban planning.

By evening, I was already trying to absorb as much as I could of the culture around me. The hotel was comfortable, but what struck me most was how peaceful and organized everything felt, even amidst the rush of the busy Tokyo streets.

Day 2: Exploring Tokyo and the World of Technology – October 1, 2025

On the second day, the program truly kicked into gear. I began my day with a visit to Aoyama Gakuin University, where we participated in an exchange session with local students. The academic exchange was fascinating as we compared education systems, cultures, and our personal aspirations. We even got a chance to speak with a few students about their daily lives, and I was inspired by their dedication and respect for learning.

After the university visit, we made our way to the LOVOT Museum. I was blown away by the robotic technology and interactive exhibits. LOVOT is a cute robot designed to interact with people and provide emotional comfort, and seeing such an innovative technology that was also human-centric was both exciting and thought-provoking.

The evening was spent in Akihabara, where I wandered through its neon-lit streets, soaked in the tech-savvy atmosphere, and explored the world of anime and electronics. I could feel the excitement of Tokyo’s youth culture here, with gaming and anime stores at every corner. It was such an immersive experience, and I found myself getting lost in the energy of it all.

Day 3: The Shinkansen and Onward to Osaka – October 2, 2025

One of the most thrilling moments of the trip was traveling to Osaka on the Shinkansen, Japan’s famous bullet train. It was everything I had heard about—fast, smooth, and efficient. The ride was a mix of excitement and awe as we zoomed past the scenic countryside. I couldn’t help but admire the seamless blend of nature and modernity that Japan offers.

Upon arrival, we visited the EXPO 2025 site in Osaka. EXPO 2025, also known as the World Expo, is a global event that will bring together nations to discuss solutions for pressing issues like sustainability, innovation, and global cooperation. This year’s theme was “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” focusing on creating a sustainable and inclusive world for future generations.

I felt incredibly lucky to be a part of this global highlight event. The pavilions were filled with cutting-edge technologies, fascinating cultural displays, and innovative ideas from around the world. The Laos Pavilion, where I could explore the exchange between Laos and Japan, was a particularly special part of the visit. It was humbling to see my home country’s culture reflected on such a grand stage.

The EXPO 2025 experience was more than just an exhibition; it was a glimpse into the future—a future where nations collaborate to create a better world. I felt deeply connected to the global community during my visit, and it was one of the standout moments of my trip.

The day ended with a visit to the Gundam statue in Odaiba, where I was amazed by the monumental size of the statue and its intricate details. Japan’s ability to celebrate both traditional and futuristic culture, all in one place, left me in awe.

Day 4: Immersing in Ayabe’s Local Culture – October 3, 2025

One of the highlights of my trip was the homestay experience in Ayabe City, located in the countryside. I spent the day with a wonderful host family, who made me feel like part of their home. It was an invaluable opportunity to experience the true heart of Japan and get a first-hand look at rural life.

Throughout the day, I was immersed in traditional Japanese culture. I learned how to prepare a simple meal together with the family, and we shared stories of our countries. This exchange was truly enlightening, as it gave me a deeper understanding of Japanese hospitality and their strong sense of community. The contrast between the fast-paced life in Tokyo and the peaceful rhythm of life in Ayabe was eye-opening.

Day 5: Kyoto and Spiritual Exploration – October 5, 2025

The next stop was Kyoto, where I visited the Toji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As I walked through the temple’s ancient halls and gardens, I could feel a profound sense of peace and serenity. Kyoto’s spiritual and cultural depth was a stark contrast to the bustling cities we had visited, and I found myself reflecting deeply on Japan’s connection to its past.

Afterward, we participated in an Action Plan workshop where we were asked to reflect on our experiences and how we would apply the knowledge we had gained. It was an important moment for me, as I thought about the lessons I had learned from the people I had met and how I could use these insights to contribute positively to my community back home.

Day 6: Revisiting Tokyo and Exchanging Ideas – October 6, 2025

Returning to Tokyo, I visited the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), where I learned about Japan’s role in international development. We discussed how Japan supports various global projects, from sustainability initiatives to educational exchanges. It was an eye-opening experience, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to understand the broader impact of Japan’s global contributions.

We also visited Odaiba, a futuristic district that exemplifies Tokyo’s cutting-edge technology. From shopping malls to virtual reality experiences, Odaiba was a testament to how Japan embraces modernity without losing sight of its traditional roots.

Day 7: A Final Farewell – October 7, 2025

As the program came to a close, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I had gained. I left Japan with a renewed sense of purpose, excited about bringing home the lessons learned and the cultural understanding I had developed. The cultural exchange program had not only enriched my knowledge of Japan but had also strengthened my own sense of identity and purpose.

Reflection: What I Learned from Japan

This exchange wasn’t just about visiting iconic landmarks or experiencing new technologies—it was about understanding and connecting with a culture that values harmony, respect, and innovation. Japan’s unique ability to merge the old and the new, its emphasis on social harmony, and its technological advancements all left a lasting impression on me.

From the peacefulness of Ayabe’s countryside to the bustling streets of Tokyo and the cultural richness of Kyoto, every moment was a reminder of how diverse and beautiful the world is. Japan taught me that true growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone, open yourself to new experiences, and connect with others on a deeper level.

Closing: Why You Should Apply JENESYS PROGRAM

As I left Japan, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for every moment, every conversation, and every experience. This JENESYS exchange not only allowed me to explore a new country but also challenged my perspectives and encouraged me to grow. I encourage everyone to take the leap and engage in a cultural exchange program. Whether it’s for learning, personal growth, or simply experiencing the world through different eyes—these programs are life-changing.

Japan is a country of contrast, blending technology and tradition, where every experience leaves you richer in knowledge and understanding. If you get the chance, take it. Japan will surprise you, inspire you, and, most importantly, change you for the better.
